Our next Austin MUFON meeting / Christmas Party will be held this coming Saturday afternoon, December 4, from 1:00 P.M. until whenever, at the INACS “Nerve Center”, located at the Forest Plaza office park, 12593 Research Blvd., Ste. 302, Austin, Tx., 78759.

  To get there take the “Oakknoll” exit from Research Blvd., (183), and stay on the North-bound feeder road. The first street you will pass will be Technology Blvd. and the very next drive after that will be the entrance to Forest Plaza. (Look for a black MUFON sign beside the entrance). Please bring your spouse or significant other.

  This will be a casually dressed, potluck affair and alcoholic beverages are permitted. Please bring your favorite “munchies” to share, i.e.-  finger sandwiches, chips & dips, veggies, cheezes, desserts, drinks, etc.

   “Why so early in the month?”,or, “Christmas is three weeks away!”,  you may ask yourself.  Well, because it’s the day we are normally scheduled to meet and it’s also the only Saturday I have open for this, for the entire month!  I’m pretty sure everyone else will also have their Saturdays tied up with office parties and plans of travelling out of town to visit relatives over the Holidays.

   I hope everyone will be able to attend because the past year’s parties have always been a really good time, but if you’re unable to attend, I understand, and I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous New Year!!

TAKEN INTO THE FRINGE
RESEARCHER FOCUS: Dr. Karla Turner

My first exposure to abduction researcher/ experiencer Dr. Karla Turner was on September 26, 1992. She was speaking to an audience of approximately 200 people in Austin, Texas. The mini-conference also featured Ed Conroy and George Wingfield, and was organized by the local Austin MUFON chapter. I have seen very little from abduction researchers that I qualified as being of any significance, so Dr. Turner was a particularly unexpected surprise.

She comes across as very strong willed, a trait she may already have had, but which could have been tempered by her interactions with this phenomena. She admits to not knowing the origin of UFOs or their occupants. She simply reports the data that she gathers and experiences herself (about three hundred cases at that time). Some have been critical of her calling attention to “negative” cases. She admits to reporting on those aspects, but is quick to point out that, a) these reports exist, and other researchers are sweeping them under the rug, and b) there are already a number of sources for cases showing “positive” interactions with supposed benevolent entities. Part of her focus seems to be an attempt to strike a balance. How can we gain an objective perspective if we are not hearing all the data?

This mini-conference coincided with the release of her first book on the subject, Into The Fringe . Shortly after her talk I bought the book and thoroughly enjoyed it. It details the emergence of the UFO and abduction phenomena into her family’s life and their struggle with the ongoing experiences. It is a very personal account which begins in 1987-1988.

Karla earned her B.A. from California State University, her M.A. from the University of Nottingham in England, and her Ph.D. in Old English Studies from the University of North Texas. She is a skeptic in the best sense of the word, but she does believe that something extraordinary is going on.

Her 1992 Austin speech was less about her own experiences, and more about the overall points of interest that she noticed in her research (300 cases she investigated with the help of Barbara Bartholic and others-Barbara had worked with Jacques Vallee on the mysterious cattle mutilations sometimes associated with UFOs). In her speech Karla made twenty specific points regarding trends noticed in the data. These trends are not specifically found in her book “Fringe,” although they are there thematically. The trends reflect darker sides of hidden memory and sexual encounters, which seem to be power plays to dominate the abductee, rather than simple hybridization studies.

These trends continue to be seen in the eight case studies in her most recent book, Taken – Inside The Alien / Human Abduction Agenda. In the book, and during her speech at the July 1994 Annual International MUFON Symposium in Austin, Texas, she made some very important assertions regarding the UFO and abduction phenomena:

“The abductee also learns from experience that the aliens induce an altered perceptive state in humans during every encounter. Employed for control, it can be used to prevent any undesired responses from the abductee. And the altered state also prevents any objective assessment of the situation by the witness. This means that the witness can only report what was seen, felt, and heard, which is not necessarily a reflection of what actually occurred. By inducing and manipulating altered consciousness in the abductee, the aliens assume full control of the situation and thus exert control over the data reported by the witness.

Abductees report alien-controlled information. This is a fact abduction researchers must face. ….. Until the day we can unmask the alien illusions, however, we can at least study the entire body of reported data, controlled though it may be, trying to learn more about why certain images and events are employed and what they can tell us about the covert directors of these scenarios.”

This statement and her coining of the term Virtual Reality Scenario to describe these altered perceptions are the best recent developments within the abduction research field. They enable us to discuss these experiences as REAL, but with the added potential inherent in describing some encounters as non-physical while there are still other more physical encounters.

Another positive aspect of Taken (in my estimation) is the inclusion of much testimony described as “UFO dreams.” Once again we see the flowing together of dream experiences” with “real” experiences and hypnotically retrieved “memories.” The results are fascinating! Though much of the abductee narratives could be seen as particularly negative, the overwhelming feeling that I came away with after reading the book, and which the abductees themselves seem to have come away with, is a deep sense of ambiguity and indeterminacy. Even if this seems daunting in the search for truth it could just be the ultimate result of our encounters with the unknown. Perhaps we can take some solace in Dr. Turner’s belief that these intelligences are truly “physical, finite and fallible.” If this is so, and they are not some aspect of ourselves or God then we may indeed be able to develop defenses against their intrusions into our reality.

SIGHTING ACCOUNT: “Scott was visiting his parents just west of Wimberley, Texas during the weekend of February 24-25, 1990. The area is farmed out but is also generally wooded near the Blanco Bend River. Between 10:00 and 10:30pm on the aforementioned date, Scott was walking home from a nearby Dairy Queen. He was aware of the time because he had just gotten a new watch recently and was looking at it frequently. It was a quiet, dark and very cool evening with clear skies and bright stars. The new moon occurred on this night so the sky was moonless.
Scott happened to look skyward in order to observe some of the constellations, “And there it was!”, he said. His first thought was, What the hell is THAT?” He was not afraid, he said, but was amazed. He had considered himself to be sceptical about UFO’s, so the experience was impressive and highly elating.

The object was triangular in shape, but it was as if the points of the triangle had been cut off. The cut was perpendicular to the bisection of the anglefor the leading apex, and the other two points were either cut the same as the leading apex or cut perpendicular to the trailing edge of the UFO.

Scott raised his arm to an angle of about 60° as an indication of the initial zenith angle relative to him. He could see only the underside surface of the object and it was glowing faintly orange over it’s entirety, like very hot metal.There were no lights and no visible protuberances, but Scott did appear to notice what appeared to be geometric shapes on the surface, formed with straight lines. He believes that these were part of the objects structure, rather than decals (painted). He said that the object was “remarkably similar” to those depicted in the “Unsolved Mysteries” segment on Belgium UFO’s.

Scott aproximated the arms-length size of the object to be 4″-4.5″ (or 10-12 times the size of a full moon). He guessed that the object must have been over 1000 feet away, but then indicated that he was not too good with scales or distances.
The vehicle was moving very slowly and in a straight line from south to north (from his right to his left) perpendicular to his walking direction. There was no sound of any kind from the vehicle or otherwise-including no dogs barking. (Any dogs barking would probably have been due to the presence of the object.)
He was so taken by the once sighting that he never once gave thought to the possibility that other such objects may have been in the area. Scott said that he must have watched the object for ten minutes before it passed out of site behind the trees. It never changed speed, direction or altitude during that time. After the object disappeared from view, Scott continued to stand and look for several minutes, totally awestruck by the experience.

Immediately upon returning home, Scott called the Hays County Sheriff’s Department and reported the sighting. The Dispatcher told him that THERE HAD BEEN OTHER CALLS REGARDING A UFO SIGHTING THAT VERY EVENING!
Later, early Monday morning, Scott called a local Austin FM Radio Station and told a DJ friend of his sighting. After watching the NBC Network’s UNSOLVED MYSTERIES program on the Belium UFO’s during the late fall of 1991, Scott called their 800 number and reported his sighting.

In March Of 1992, Scott called an Austin Parapsychology group who referred him to someone named John (doesn’t remember last name). John pointed Scott to some woman (name not remembered) who referred him to Austin MUFON. On March 23, 1992, Scott called Austin MUFON and told Mrs. Ellen Stuart of his sighting. Ellen provided an outline of the sighting to me on March 28, 1992 at a regular MUFON meeting. Scott also called the Hays County Sheriff’s Department to get more information on the UFO sighting. He was told that they had no record of his report or any other report of the UFO.

On May, 25, 1992 at 2:00pm CST, I met with Scott at his residence and received his report.”
